Fall is the busiest season in publishing, and despite locking down under pandemic conditions for a year and a half, September 2021 is no different. We’ve gathered some of our most anticipated and under-hyped new releases coming out this month for you to check out.

This month’s featured indie bookstore is Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh, North Carolina. This is the local indie bookstore for the first author on our recommendation list.

No Gods, No Monsters

Cadwell Turnbull, September 7

In Turnbull’s sophomore novel, an apparent case of police brutality reveals the existence of monsters from lore, ready to be seen by the larger world—even if the world’s not ready for them.

No Gods, No Monsters is the first nove in a new series from the award-winning author of The Lesson.

Grievers

adrienne maree brown, September 7

Grief is a literal plague in brown’s debut novel, which follows the daughter of Patient Zero in Detroit’s epidemic of grief, which stops the afflicted in time.

Grievers marks the launch of AK Press’s Black Dawn series, followed by the November release of Margaret Killjoy’s A Country of Ghosts.

From the Neck Up and Other Stories

Aliya Whiteley, September 14

In a new collection of work, award-winning speculative fiction author Aliya Whiteley introduces readers to futuristic Ice Ages, alien invasions, and fresh takes on fairy tales in 16 short stories.

Readers may also be interested in Whiteley’s Skyward Inn, featured in our March 2021 recommended reading.

The Annual Migration of Clouds

Premee Mohamed, September 28

In a post-climate crisis future Alberta, a young woman infected with a mind-altering fungi has a chance to provide hope and stability for her family in an unstable landscape.

This post-disaster hopepunk novella is Mohamed’s third speculative fiction release in 2021 and a stunning introduction to the author’s work.
